Black Cat Gin
Black Cat Gin is one of the first brands to join the Makers & Merchants Barossa collective.
A relatively new brand, husband and wife team Diane Stewart and Steve Mitchell have years of industry experience. Their adult children, Celia and Sefton, also help in the business. Who wouldn’t want to work with Mum and Dad when they’re making gin?
Black Cat’s newest gin, the Archimedes is part of our first seasonal bundle. So we wanted to share a little more about their story with you.
“We bring our experience as a distiller and a viticulturist to create exciting new blends.”
How did you end up launching a boutique gin brand?
We started working on the idea in early 2018. After over 20 years in the industry, it was actually an easy decision. We both enjoy gin, so in November 2018, we took the leap and Black Cat Gin was born.
What’s it like owning a gin company? Is it everything you expected?
It’s pretty focused on production days. And when we’re preparing for events and tastings (which we hope we’ll be doing again soon) it’s pretty busy. But once the boxes are ticked, we’re able to drop back a gear and relax. This is when the creative ideas bubble up and we start getting ideas for our next gin. We love a long road trip and have found they’re the perfect place to brainstorm new ideas.
What have been the highlights so far?
We really enjoy meeting our customers at events and getting their feedback. Hearing the positive responses from our customers is so encouraging. And we love being part of iconic events like the Barossa Vintage Festival and Tour Down Under.
What makes your gin special?
Our customers say they like the bright, fresh flavour profiles of our blends. We love hearing this because our top priority is to make classic gins that people enjoy drinking. We bring our experience as a distiller and a viticulturist to create exciting new blends. And it’s more than just producing and distilling the gin. We also grow some of the grapes used in our gins.
Why did you join Makers & Merchants Barossa?
We joined Makers & Merchants Barossa because it’s an excellent way to deliver a Barossa experience to consumers globally. They’ve created a fabulous collection with premium brands you won’t find in the mass market. Makers & Merchants Barossa is a high quality avenue for our gins.
What excites you about the launch of Makers & Merchants Barossa?
We’re looking forward to the opportunities for creative collaboration with like-minded producers. Makers & Merchants Barossa have a well organised platform, and it’s easy for us to work with them. We appreciate the investment and commitment from Shelley, Tash and the team to develop a strong social media campaign. From high quality images to sustainable packaging, we feel our brand will have great support. We’re excited about the prospect of increased sales, and we’re looking forward to new opportunities, connections and ideas.
